Dubai fine jewellery event to showcase gold retail opportunities

A fine jewellery fair is being planned for Dubai in October this year, showcasing the work of the most elite gold jewellers and watchmakers in the world.

The exclusive event, Salon Prive Haute Joaillerie Dubai, is being organised by luxury marketing organisations The Nancy Robey Partnership and Turret Middle East.

Thousands of people are expected to attend the three-day show in the United Arab Emirates between October 18th and 21st, with entry by invitation only.

Around 130 luxury retail companies from around the world will showcase their work, including businesses from Russia, India, China, the Middle East and the Ukraine.

Salon Prive Haute Joaillerie Dubai will be held at the five-star Madinat Jumeirah and its goal is "to deliver new business in non-traditional markets of emerging opportunity".

Meanwhile, a range of 18-c gold watches has been created by Vacheron Constantin especially for Arab weddings, according to Maktoob Business.

Gold rings forms centerpiece of annual wedding event

Gold rings will be at the heart of the annual Wedding Band Weekend at Long’s Jewelers in Burlington, Vermont.

The Boston-based company organises the event each year and is expecting up to 2,000 people to attend this month, according to the National Jeweler Network.

Craig Rottenberg, president of Long’s Jewelers, stated: "The year leading up to a wedding is one filled with numerous choices and decisions for the engaged couple."

Taking place between March 27th and 29th at the company’s store in Burlington, the Annual Wedding Band Weekend will offer a range of rings from top bridal designers, including classic and custom designs.

Among the designers whose work will be showcased at the fair are Ritani, Memoire and Scott Kay, while local businesses will provide prizes for attendees.

Long’s Jewelers specialises in high-end designer jewellery and watches and has five locations throughout New England, including its flagship store in the heart of Boston’s Financial District.

Firm applies to resume mining in Orara gold fields

A company based in Sydney has applied for an exploration licence to resume mining in the Orara gold fields of Australia.

According to the Coffs Coast Advocate, John Slade, principal of Geophysical Consulting Services, has readvertised an application for an exploration licence in New South Wales.

Covering one kilometre of land to the north-west of Coffs Harbour, the licence is being considered by the Australian Department of Primary Industries and is funded by a consortium of investors from Sydney.

If the licence is granted, it could lead to mining recommencing on the Orara gold fields and Mr Slade has stated that he expects that the it will be approved soon.

The Orara gold fields have yielded significant volumes of gold in the past and used to house the Beacon, Perseverance and Matilda gold mines.

Meanwhile, Australian Mines has suggested that the current high price of gold means that it is planning to focus its attention on gold operations, Dow Jones Newswires reported.

Obtala discovers new anomaly in gold zone

Obtala Resources has announced that it has discovered a new gold zone within the Lake Victoria Goldfields.

The firm revealed that in-fill soil sampling carried out on the Buckreef licence in Northern Tanzania identified a new 4km long gold-in-soil geochemical anomaly.

According to Obtala, gold in the 2,912 soil samples collected was up to 704 parts per billion (equivalent to 0.704 g/t).

The anomaly is located 4km west of IamGold’s Buckreef gold mine and 30km south-west of the Geita gold mine, owned by AngloGold-Ashanti.

Frank Scolaro, chairman of Obtala, said that the results had "resolved a considerably larger target than defined by the original sampling in 2008", representing an exciting new zone of mineralisation on the property.

Based in London and quoted on the AIM exchange, Obtala Resources is a mineral exploration and development company based in London with a focus on mining opportunities in Tanzania, east Africa.

Australian Mines ‘plans to focus on gold’

Australian Mines has revealed that it is planning to focus its attention on its gold operations, having suspended its nickel activities late last year.

The company stated that the current market conditions could see it switch to gold mining, as gold prices continue to hold steady despite the global economic slowdown, according to Dow Jones Newswires.

"We are giving nickel the flick and may try our luck at gold," Australian Mines told the news source.

Listed on the Australian stock exchange, Australian Mines is a metals mining and exploration firm with operations in the Kambalda region of Western Australia.

In other news, Wallace Ng, a metals dealer at financial institution Fortis Bank, recently told Bloomberg that the price of gold could rise further in the coming weeks.

He explained that a so-called "head and shoulders" pattern is emerging as investors continue to turn to gold, indicating that its value will continue to increase.

Plato Gold releases new resource estimate for Nordeau West zone

Plato Gold has released a new NI 43-101 compliant resource calculation for its Nordeau West gold zone in Quebec, Canada.

The new NI 43-101 compliant resource replaces a previous 280,700 tonnes historical non-compliant estimate and work will start soon on the Nordeau East gold zone and Bateman claims by Plato Gold.

According to the latest figures, presented in a report by John Langton, the total resource for the Nordeau West property, located east of Val D’Or, is 1,337,663 tonnes containing 176,527 ounces of gold.

Globex Mining Enterprises reported the new resource estimate for the Nordeau West gold zone and retains a ten per cent net profit royalty and a two per cent net metal royalty from all mineral production from the prospect.

Junior Canadian exploration company Plato Gold is focused on prospective properties in recognised gold mining districts worldwide and currently has an interest in the Timmins, Ontario region, seven properties around Val d’Or and three properties in Santa Cruz province, southern Argentina.

Gold nanocups ‘could boost solar cell performance’

Scientists have used gold and nanotechnology to create a metamaterial that could be used in the production of highly-efficient solar cells, it has emerged.

Researchers at Rice University have developed a material consisting of particles known as nanocups that collects light and then emits it in a single direction.

The work, which has been published in the February issue of the Nano Letters journal, has been carried out by Naomi Halas and Nikolay Mirin.

Previous research by Mr Mirin had seen him attempt to create a thin film of gold with nano-sized holes, a study that prompted him to further investigate the use of isolated nanocups.

"The big breakthrough here was being able to lift the nanocups off of a structure and preserve their orientation," Ms Halas explained, adding that that the metamaterial could also be used to transmit signals between computer chips.

Last week scientists at Brown University used gold nanoparticles to make a possible breakthrough in the area of breast cancer treatment, Nanowerk News reports.

Gold coin scheme extended by India Post

India’s postal department has extended its gold sale scheme in the city of Ludhiana, it has emerged.

According to the Times of India, the initiative will now end on April 10th, giving residents more time to purchase coins made from the precious metal.

And buyers are to receive a five per cent discount on every purchase, a spokesperson for India Post told the news source, adding that the offer "is only available at the postal department and not at any jeweller shop".

Gold coins weighting up to 8g are available as part of the promotion, the extension of which has been welcomed by those living in the city.

"The department is giving a guarantee of 99.99 per cent pure gold," local resident Ravinder Dhingra told the news source, adding that 0.5g and 1g coins are not available at banks or jewellers in the area.

Earlier this month India Post revealed that it is extending the gold coin promotion to the states of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.

Credit crunch ‘has brought increase in gold demand’

Demand for gold has increased across the US since the onset of the global financial crisis, experts have suggested.

David Beahm, Vice president of economic research at New Orleans-based precious metals retailer Blanchard and Co told New Orleans Business News that growing numbers of investors have been looking to buy gold since the collapse of Lehman Brothers in September 2008.

Sales of the metals in the 60 days after the bank went under reached new highs and Mr Beahm told the news source that a lot of these purchases were "motivated by fear".

"Buyers wanted to have an asset they could hold in their hand and that wouldn’t go to zero overnight," he explained.

Mr Beahm’s views were echoed by rare coin specialist Barry Stuppler, who told the news source that many of those purchasing gold now are doing so in order to "get out" of owning paper money.

Demand for antique jewellery is also on the increase, with expert Wendy Kuper telling the West Australian that gold bracelets and engagement rings are becoming especially popular.
