Nanotechnology research centre opened in Wales

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

A new centre aimed at enhancing research into nanotechnology has been opened in Wales.

Swansea University is the home of the Centre for NanoHealth, which is aiming to use the technology to develop new treatment for patients.

Gold is often used in the research and co-director Dr Steve Conlan told the Western Mail that the precious metal is likely to play a part in studies.

With work involving particles 100,000 times thinner than a human hair, he remarked: "When you get down to that scale substances start to have different properties - gold looks red."

Thought to be the first of its kind in Europe, the centre is set to focus on early prevention on disease.

Earlier this week, New Scientist revealed that researchers at the Institute of Chemical and Engineering Sciences in Singapore had discovered a means to use gold nanoparticles in thin coatings for LCD and plasma screens.

Gold used in award-winning cancer treatment technique

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

A PhD student whose new cancer treatment technique uses gold nanotechnology has been awarded a top prize for his pioneering efforts.

Geoffrey von Maltzahn, a graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a biomedical engineer, developed gold nano-antennas that can target and destroy cancerous tumours.

And his innovative work has earned him the Lemelson-MIT Student Prize and a cheque for $30,000 (£21,352).

"This concept of engineering systems of nanoparticles that collectively outsmart disease barriers has many potential applications in medicine, from improving regenerative medicines to ultra-sensitive diagnostics," Mr von Maltzahn said.

He added that drug doses delivered to cancer patients may become more effective with reduced side effects as a result of his work.

Last month scientists at Northwestern University announced that adding small interfering RNA (siRNA) molecules to the surface of gold nanoparticles can improve the ability of siRNA to regulate cancer genes, Nanowerk reported.

American Bonanza Gold drills highest gold grades to date at Copperstone

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

American Bonanza Gold has announced that it has drilled its highest gold grades to date at its Copperstone project in Arizona.

The firm reported that drill hole 08CS-50 encountered a 5.8m structural zone grading 227.7 g/t gold in the South Pit gold zone, the second new zone discovered at the property during recent exploration drilling.

It has completed a total of 11 drill holes at the South Pit zone during 2007 and 2008, all of which encountered targeted fault zones and gold mineralisation.

That the South Pit and Southwest zones at Copperstone have the potential to extend its mine life beyond current resources and further drilling is now planned, the company said.

Within the Walker Lane mineral belt of western Arizona, the Copperstone property is a previously mined site with "clean, non-sulfide bearing mineral resource".

Based in Vancouver, British Columbia, American Bonanza Gold has a series of high-grade gold properties in the US and Canada.

In a progress report, published in November 2008, the firm said that it had engaged the services of Dr Derek McBride to evaluate its Eby-Otto property in Kirkland Lake and its nearby Kirana Mines claims.
